Tom Lambotte / Talking to AI

Should I talk to AI instead of typing? How founders use voice to think faster

Yes. You can talk three times faster than you can type, and talking captures your full ideas, every nuance and detail, that typing strips out.

Tom Lambotte has coached 225 founders through this. Here is how to quit typing and start talking to AI.

Why is talking to AI better than typing?

Your brain thinks faster than your hands can type. When you're in flow and thinking deeply, your mind is processing context, emotions, patterns, connections, and insights simultaneously. The moment you try to capture it by typing or writing, you slow down, edit yourself, simplify, and strip out the nuance.

You have 100 insights in your head. When you sit down to write it out, only 10 make it onto the page. By the time you finish typing one thought, the other 90 insights are gone.

We think in 16 million colors, and then we type in black and white. So much of our inner genius gets lost in the translation between our brain and the keyboard.

What do I lose when I type my prompts into AI?

You lose the context, and context is what AI needs to give you anything useful. Think about everything in your head before you prompt anything. You carry nuance, detail, background, and a clear sense of what you want AND do not want.

Then you sit down and type: "I need help writing the About Us page on my website."

For most of history, typing was the only way to get a thought out of your head and into your main tool (typewriter, keyboard, mobile device). That is no longer the case, yet most of us are still writing like it is. When you give AI three times the context, you get three times the clarity.

Praveen Suthrum used AI every day. Nothing flowed until he stopped typing and started talking.

Praveen is an author, founder, and technologist building an AI-forward healthcare platform. He uses AI daily, thinks strategically, and is not new to this.

But when he sat down to generate meaningful insights, nothing flowed. The interface and the intention were there, but something felt off.

Then he stopped typing and started talking. No agenda, no filter, no "prompt strategy." He opened the mic and talked through his thoughts, and everything shifted.

Praveen told me afterward that talking his thoughts out loud helped him discover what he actually believed. When he let AI respond to that, it felt like momentum.

After the course, he told me: "Tom, what's really unique about your program is that everything you taught us will be just as relevant a year from now as it is today."

Does talking to AI help if I already use it every day?

Yes. Most people I know are still typing when they work with AI. I had a founder in the Sprint who spent 12 months on ChatGPT and never realized this. Once he started dictating his prompts, he called it "such a big insight… the next level is turning it into voice."

The result: he was generating content in his tone, while others were still pecking keys and wondering why the AI doesn't "get them."

Mark Fujiwara talked into ChatGPT for 10 minutes and came out with 10 course modules.

Mark isn't new to AI. Like most entrepreneurs, he had toyed around with it. Before the Sprint, writing a simple email introduction would take him 5 to 10 minutes of overthinking.

After the first session, he told me: "I just tried the voice prompt method and … whoa."

He was building a high-level course for a mastermind, assuming it would take multiple planning sessions. He talked for 10 minutes into ChatGPT, and in that time, AI helped him lay out 10 solid course modules, including stories to integrate into each one.

"Lo and behold… I'm almost going to say perfect."

What happens when founders quit typing and start talking?

Ideas that were stuck in their heads finally get out.

  • Molly Reams Thompson used to hate writing, fighting blank pages and overthinking every sentence. She opened a mic and started talking, then let ChatGPT turn those spoken ideas into drafts. The result was three LinkedIn articles in a week and one new client signed. As she put it: "It's like my ideas had to go through TSA before they could come out."
  • Christopher Carsten, CEO of Armada Law, recorded his thoughts during a casual morning run and turned that recording into a detailed marketing strategy, ready to execute.
  • Chris Cornelison, CEO of Solutions Rx, used this voice-first process to compress his annual planning from 2+ weeks to 2 hours.

How do I start talking to AI instead of typing?

Tap the microphone and talk for two to three minutes before you ask AI for anything. Here is one way to begin:

  1. Open ChatGPT on your phone or computer and tap the microphone.
  2. Talk for 2 to 3 minutes as if you're explaining an idea to a colleague. Don't edit yourself, just riff. The more detail, the better.
  3. Hit stop. ChatGPT will transcribe everything word for word.
  4. If you're thinking something through, ask it: "Reflect back the 3 clearest ideas here and suggest one next step for each."
  5. If you're writing something, ask it: "Reframe this as a LinkedIn post (or an email) without changing my original voice, tone, or style." Then put the AI's draft side by side with your original transcript.

Chances are you'll see where the machine starts sanding down your edges: removing quirks, smoothing over your phrases, sterilizing the voice. That's your training moment. Push back. Tell it: "No, use my original words. Keep my tone. Keep my examples." There is more on keeping your own voice in AI writing.

You don't need a desk for this. I clip on a wireless mic, hit record, and talk out loud on a hike. Back home, the transcript goes into AI and it untangles the spaghetti: themes, next actions, even the side ideas I often lose.

What to do this week

Take the next challenge you were about to type into AI, and say it out loud instead. All of it, the way you would explain it to a mentor who was about to give you guidance. You will be surprised how much you've been leaving out.

I'd rather see you record three 10-minute brain dumps a week than one marathon session you avoid.

Quit Typing, Start Talking™ is the first mindset we teach in Week 1 of The 4-Week AI Leverage Sprint for Founders.
